Baptisms

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

In infant baptism (or Christening) the child’s parents are thanking God for his gift of life, making a decision to start their child on the journey of faith and asking for the Church’s support. An adult being baptised will make his/her own vows.
Whether adult or child, baptism marks the start of a journey of faith, which involves turning away from all that is evil, turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family.

At St Martin’s we also offer a Thanks giving Service, in which the parents thank God for the life of their child, but prefer to leave the actual baptism until the child is older. It is not essential for the children’s parents to be married, and a single parent may have his /her child baptised.
