Baptism marks the beginning of a journey of faith in Jesus Christ and is a sign of welcome into the Church family. It is often called a ‘christening’, particularly for babies and toddlers, when parents, godparents and the rest of the church family promise to nurture the child in the Christian faith, anticipating that one day they will come to confirm that faith for themselves. If parents feel unable to make the promises required in the baptism service, we are very pleased to offer a service of thanksgiving and dedication instead. Because it is a significant and important step on a journey of faith, we offer preparation sessions, to explain the meaning of baptism and explore some basics of the Christian faith, through the baptismal symbols of water, light and the cross. Anyone living in the parish of St Martin’s or with a connection to the church, is welcome to enquire about being baptised here. We welcome people of all ages for baptism, which occurs during the main Sunday morning service, usually on the first Sunday of the month.
